Do you find mornings to be a struggle...
or perhaps you’re seeking a way to weave your faith into the start of your day?
Whether you rise with the sun or hit that snooze button one too many times (we’ve all been there! ⏰), creating a morning routine that centers around God can significantly transform how you approach the day ahead.
I was fortunate to grow up in a household where my parents demonstrated a godly morning routine. My dad would be seated at the kitchen table, eating his Trader Joe’s cereal 🥣 while reading his devotional, and my mom would be sitting in living room, coffee in hand ☕, diving deep into God’s Word. Their practice was never about perfection but about intentionally, carving out time to seek God first.
This taught me the vital lesson of prioritizing faith and spirituality in our daily lives. Those formative experiences instilled in me the belief that mornings can be a sacred time for reflection, prayer, and connection with God.
Now, as an adult, I’ve come to understand the importance of prioritizing God in my mornings regardless of how busy life gets. The daily grind can sometimes feel overwhelming, but dedicating just a few moments to God can provide clarity, strength, and peace.
And guess what?
You can cultivate this practice too! Here’s how I’ve crafted a God-centered morning routine, and I genuinely hope it inspires you to make your mornings more meaningful and spiritually enriching.
1. Wake Up Early: Start Your Day with God ⏰
The first step to establishing a godly morning routine is waking up early. I understand that this might sound intimidating, but there’s something truly special about beginning your day when the world is still quiet.
Proverbs 8:17 beautifully reminds us, “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.” This verse highlights the blessings of seeking God in the stillness, fostering a deeper relationship with Him. What better time to sit with God than the morning!
Waking up earlier creates precious space for you to meet with God without distractions, allowing for a more focused and meaningful time of prayer and reflection.
If you typically wake up at 8 AM, consider gradually adjusting your schedule by setting your alarm for 7 AM the next day, then 6:30 AM, and so on, until you find a time that suits your lifestyle.
Personally, I cherish waking up around 5 AM (I know that's a little crazy). The beauty of those early hours provides the perfect backdrop for connecting with God before the day’s demands take over.
During this sacred time, I meditate on Scripture, journal my thoughts, or simply sit in silence, allowing gratitude to fill my heart and my mind to center on His presence.
2. Your Holy Juice: Coffee, Tea, or Matcha? 🍵
Let’s be real for a second: what’s your holy juice? For me, it’s usually coffee. ☕ But some days I’ll switch it up with a matcha or black tea to keep my body from getting too used to the caffeine overload.
Whatever your “holy juice” is, let it be a symbol of your waking up and preparing yourself for the day ahead.
As you sip, thank God for another day of life and ask Him to guide your steps as you go through your morning routine.
3. Quiet Time: Bible Reading 📖
Now that you’re awake and alert (thanks to your holy juice!), it’s time for quiet time with God. I love starting with a few chapters from the Bible.
Psalm 119:105 reminds us that “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
As you read, underline verses that stand out to you or ones you don’t fully understand. Don’t be afraid to look up commentaries or even ask a mentor about them! I also like to write down reflections in my journal, so I don’t forget what God has shown me in that moment.
4. Quiet Time: Reading a Christian Book 📚
After reading the Bible, I like to dive into a Christian book. Right now, I’m reading some beautiful poetry by Charles Spurgeon called Christ Our All. It’s hundreds of years old but still so full of truth and power.
Take a few minutes to read a chapter or a poem.
It doesn’t have to be long, but it’s another way to fill your heart with wisdom and insight that leads you closer to Christ.
Proverbs 4:7 says, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it costs all you have, get understanding.”
5. Quiet Time: Writing Your Prayers ✍️
I don’t know about you, but my mind tends to race, and sometimes my thoughts can feel all over the place, especially early in the morning.
Anyone else?
That's why I always take time to write out my prayers. It’s a great way to clear my mind and focus my heart on what matters.
In my prayer journal, I write out whatever is going on in my life: praises, struggles, anxieties, or anything else I need to bring before God.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
6. Kneel in Prayer 🙏
When I feel ready, I take a moment to kneel and pray. There’s something powerful about physically positioning yourself as a reminder that God is bigger than all of my worries, and I am surrendering everything to Him.
James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”
Praying out loud helps me to feel more focused and grounded.
It’s not about being perfect in my prayers but authentic and honest with my Heavenly Father.
7. Plan Out Your Day 📅
One of the best ways to honor God is to be productive with the time He has given you.
Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
After I’ve spent time with God, I pull out my planner or journal and make a to-do list for the day.
It helps me stay organized and focused on what God has called me to do. Whether it’s errands, work, or a meeting with a friend, putting it on paper ensures that I’m using my time wisely and for His glory.
8. Workout for Your Body and Soul 💪
For me, a workout is non-negotiable in the mornings. Not only does it help me stay healthy, but it’s also a way to take care of the temple that God has given me.
I have a set weekly workout routine for you below, but feel free to tweak it based on your preferences. Maybe you prefer yoga, a walk, or a workout video. Just find something that helps you feel energized and strong.
If working out in the morning isn’t your thing, that’s okay! You can always work out in the evening or try something else that helps you feel balanced.
Here’s an example of my workout split for the week:
Monday - Lower Body
Tuesday - HIIT and Abs
Wednesday - Pilates
Thursday - Upper Body
Friday - Cardio (Running, HIIT, Dance, Cycling, etc.)
Saturday - Fun Workout (Hiking, Pickleball, Workout class, etc.)
Sunday - Rest and Stretch
9. BONUS Idea: Go on a Prayer Walk 🌳
Starting your day outside in God’s creation is another amazing way to connect with Him. I love going on early morning prayer walks, whether it’s through a park or just around my neighborhood.
Take in the beauty around you, pray, and thank God for His power and creativity.
It’s a great way to start your day in gratitude!
10. BONUS Idea: Write Out Your Routine 📝
Once you’ve figured out what works for you, write out your Godly morning routine and hang it somewhere you can see it -> your desk, mirror, or phone. This isn’t about turning it into a to-do list but a guide to help keep your mornings focused on God. Try this out if it’s helpful!
Here’s a simple example to get you started:
Wake up at 5am
Make your bed
Drink water, then make coffee/tea
Find your quiet time space
Read Scripture
Read a chapter from a Christian book
Write in your prayer journal
Pray out loud to the Lord
Workout or stretch
🌟 Conclusion: A Morning of Purpose & Peace 🌟
Sweet friend, as you begin to craft your God-centered morning routine, remember this: it’s not about perfection, but about prioritizing God in your daily life.
Even on days when things don’t go exactly as planned, know that God sees your heart. He delights in the moments you set aside to seek Him, whether it's through Bible reading, prayer, or simply being still in His presence.
Creating a godly morning routine is a powerful way to start each day with purpose, peace, and perspective. It sets the tone for everything ahead and helps you walk confidently in the direction God is leading you. Whether you wake up at 5am or 8am, the key is to make space for Him first.
The best part? ...
God promises to meet us when we seek Him!
As you begin each day with the Lord, you’ll find that He strengthens you, guides you, and fills you with the joy and peace that only He can provide.
Lamentations 3:23 says, “Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning.”
So take a deep breath. You’ve got this! Whether you’re just beginning your morning routine or refining it, keep seeking Him, keep trusting Him, and watch as He transforms your days one morning at a time.
