5 Brilliant Ways to Spend Time with God

Updated: Oct 9, 2025

I’ve often found myself puzzled when I hear someone say, “God told me to do this…” or “I feel like God is calling me to minister to this person…” or even, “God is calling me to….”

What do these phrases really mean? 🤔

I’ve been walking with the Lord for a while now, and I still wonder what it feels like to hear God’s voice so clearly. What is that inner prompting? What does it even look like when God speaks to us?

And sometimes, I can't help but wonder: is this just a bunch of mystical mumbo-jumbo? 😅

I know I’m not the only one who has felt this way. I try to be careful when people talk about hearing from God. I truly believe that personal callings are just that personal. It’s between you and God. But one thing I do long for is a deeper connection with Him and a clearer understanding of His voice.

How can we hear God’s voice more clearly? Unfortunately, there isn’t a perfect formula. Every journey with God is different. The key is to keep pursuing Him and stay faithful with the things He places before you each day.

However, there are ways to make space for God in our busy lives. In this post, I want to share five creative and meaningful ways to spend time with God - ways that might help you hear His whisper more clearly and connect with Him in a deeper way.

1. Step Out Into Nature 🌿

Sometimes the simplest things can bring us closer to God. Nature is a beautiful reflection of His creativity and care for us. Going on a walk, sitting under a tree, or listening to the birds—these small moments allow us to slow down and appreciate the world He’s made. God is everywhere, and it’s important to thank Him for the simple beauty around us.

Verse to reflect on:"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." Psalm 19:1

2. Solo Dates with God 💖

Even if you’re not single, spending one-on-one time with God is powerful. No distractions, no boyfriend or husband, no one else’s opinions, just you and your Savior. Whether it’s walking in the park, heading to your favorite coffee shop, or simply sitting on your bed, carve out space to connect with Him. Take a journal and write out your prayers or simply sit and listen. A solo date with God doesn’t need to be anything extravagant, but it can become one of your most treasured moments.

3. Create a Prayer Space 🙏

If you’ve heard of a prayer board, imagine making a special space dedicated to prayer, your own prayer space. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. It could be a corner of your room or even a cozy nook where you can sit and talk to God without distractions. Whether you light a candle, play worship music, or simply sit in silence, this space should feel like your own. It’s where you and God meet regularly, just the two of you.

Verse to reflect on:"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen; then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Matthew 6:6

4. Get Crafty for Jesus 🎨

Drawing in a notebook.

Are you into arts and crafts? That’s another amazing way to connect with God! I love creating cards for friends, painting, or even crocheting. When I’m working on a craft, I like to play worship music in the background, and I focus on offering my creative work as a gift to God. Whatever you’re making, remember that your creativity is a reflection of the Creator Himself. It’s a way of honoring God with the talents He’s given you.

Verse to reflect on:"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Colossians 3:23

5. Read Christian Poetry 📖

If you enjoy reading, Christian poetry can be a beautiful way to connect with God’s heart. Poets like Charles Spurgeon have written words that inspire deep reflection and worship. Poetry allows us to slow down and deeply feel the truths of the Gospel. I started reading Christ Our All by Spurgeon on my commute, and it’s amazing how those few moments of reading and reflecting can transform my heart before heading into my day.

You don’t have to be an avid reader to appreciate poetry. If you’re new to it, just start small. Choose a poem that speaks to you, reflect on its meaning, and allow God to speak to you through it.

Verse to reflect on:"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3:16

Conclusion 🕊️

I hope these ideas inspire you to spend time with God in fresh, meaningful ways. Life gets busy, but there are always moments to pause and connect with Him, whether it’s during your daily quiet time, Bible study, or even while doing something creative or reflective.

Remember, spending time with God doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s about intimacy, connection, and a heart that’s open to hearing His voice. Take time to pray and ask God how you can incorporate these practices into your own life.

He wants you to draw near to Him, and He’ll meet you where you are, no matter how busy life gets.

Verse to reflect on:

"Come near to God and he will come near to you." James 4:8
